"So, the surgery went well?" I asked, my voice tight. Michael, beaming, launched into a detailed account of the high-pressure surgery he had assisted with just that morning. He never mentioned the surgery was for his pet hamster and his job was just a volunteer position at a veterinary clinic. My hands were shaking. I’d helped him move into his apartment a few months prior, where he had proudly shown off his brand new surgical tools and equipment. The whole thing seemed so absurd. I wanted to leave.
