"Cancelled?" Mark barked, his voice sharp enough to crack glass. The words hung in the air, heavy and unwelcome. He glared at Sarah, the messenger of bad news, who fidgeted under his stare. He’d envisioned the scene: the look on his face, a genuine show of shock, then joy, then acceptance when his friends leaped out. Now? Empty promises, shattered expectations.

He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it further. The sheer audacity of it! He’d bought a new shirt, a ridiculously expensive one, specifically for the occasion. The thought of it sitting unworn in his closet was infuriating. He wanted to scream, to stamp his feet, to hurl something. Instead, he just stood there, the disappointment a cold weight in his chest.
