“Congratulations, Maria!” The words felt like sandpaper scraping against Daniel's vocal cords. He tried to smile, but the corners of his mouth refused to cooperate. He was in the middle of a team-building exercise and just found out Maria, a recent graduate, was hired at a higher pay rate than him.

Maria had excitedly described her new role and benefits, her words echoing in Daniel’s ears. He looked around the room, at the smiling faces and the colorful decorations, and felt a profound sense of disconnect.

As he walked home, his usual route through the park suddenly seemed bleak. The setting sun cast long shadows, mirroring the emptiness he felt.
