The air conditioning in the office seemed to be working overtime, but David was still sweating. He sat at his desk, staring blankly at a spreadsheet he had been working on. He kept replaying the scene from the meeting where the news dropped.

He'd spent years honing his skills, proving himself. His dedication had gotten him nowhere. The office door opened and it was the new associate, smiling and relaxed. She’d just had a new office assigned, with a view.

David leaned back in his chair, the squeak of the springs a small, defiant sound in the quiet space.
