Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside her. He’d been unusually quiet all evening, glued to his phone. Finally, she peered over his shoulder. The screen glowed with unfamiliar characters. Her own language, twisted and rearranged.

A hot flush crept up her neck. He flinched, snapping the phone shut. “What’s that?” she demanded, her voice rising.

He mumbled something about a new app. She snatched the phone, scrolling through the lessons. He’d clearly been at this for months, the interface showing significant progress. She couldn't believe it. He’d never shown any interest. She threw the phone onto the sofa, the screen flashing.
