He’d booked a trip, a surprise. She’d found the itinerary, hidden, tucked away in his drawer. It listed a visit to her childhood hometown, and then a series of language classes. She felt a jolt of shock, then disbelief.

She stood in the middle of the room, the paper clutched in her hand. Why? He knew her family. He knew how she felt about them being here. He must have known.

He entered the room, and she felt the blood drain from her face. He smiled, a nervous, expectant smile. “Surprise!” he said. She held up the paper, her hand trembling. “Why?”
