“This is unbelievable,” he muttered, kicking a dented metal lunchbox across the attic floor. He'd been looking for the old family photo albums. He found something else.

The attic was a treasure trove of unwanted items. He sifted through a mountain of discarded newspapers, their headlines already yellowing. "What's wrong with people?" he said to the empty room.

He found a child's drawing, a crayon depiction of a house, tacked to a piece of cardboard. The child’s name, "Emily," was scrawled at the bottom. He crumpled the drawing in his hand, then threw it against the opposite wall.
