“So he said he was *studying* all weekend?” The question hung in the air, a barbed arrow aimed at the heart of the betrayal. The man, a rather stern fellow named Alex, ran a hand through his hair, his eyes narrowed. Across from him, a younger woman with a similar look of fury on her face nodded curtly.

They were in the campus library, the irony of their location not lost on Alex. He’d trusted this man, believed him, shared his secrets. Now, he felt a simmering resentment, a slow burn that threatened to erupt.

He leaned back in his chair, trying to control his breathing. He wanted to break something, to vandalize something, to cause some kind of chaos. He felt a burning in his cheeks, a flush of anger that he couldn’t seem to quell. He looked at the books surrounding him, the words on the page. His own life felt like a bad novel.
