The appraisal report lay on the kitchen table, its figures cold and impersonal. He, David, stared at the numbers, his chest heavy. Shared ownership. He’d never cared for the place. It was old, drafty, filled with the ghosts of a childhood he’d rather forget. But his sister, Sarah, had always cherished it. It was her sanctuary, her connection to their shared past.

He felt a tightness in his throat, a burning sensation behind his eyes. He’d tried to be a good brother, to support her dreams, to be there for her. But this...this felt like a betrayal. He should have known she wouldn't truly care for the shared venture.

He grabbed his coat, suddenly desperate to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the house. He needed some air, a place to think, to regain some sense of equilibrium.
