The email notification – *High School Reunion!* – had popped up on the screen, a digital intrusion into his meticulously crafted world. He clicked on it, his eyebrow arching with a raised air. Did they really think he would attend? He, who had painstakingly distanced himself from the mediocrity of his past.

His fingers hovered over the "delete" button. He visualized the faces, the stale jokes, the predictable conversations. He couldn’t quite bring himself to obliterate the email immediately, but he knew what the outcome would be. He would, of course, be absent.
