The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, taunting her. “Ancestry Results Are In!” it screamed. She’d always known the results would come back clean. Both her parents were of solid, if boring, stock. She clicked, and the screen flashed. The percentage breakdowns blurred before her eyes; British, German, a smattering of other European nations. Then, further down, the family match section. A name she didn’t recognize, a woman she’d never heard of, listed as “Possible Parent.” Amelia’s jaw tightened. She slammed her laptop shut, the click echoing in the sudden silence of her apartment. That was a lie. This whole thing was a lie.
