It was a cold, hard knot that formed in Clara’s gut when she saw the Facebook event. Her sister, Emily, was throwing a “surprise picnic” on the same afternoon as Clara’s highly anticipated book launch. She slammed her laptop shut. That was it.

Clara got up and began to pace, the click of her heels a relentless metronome in the silence of her apartment. She was going to make sure that everyone, and especially Emily, understood the seriousness of her work. She had spent a year writing, and a month planning the party.

The heat was rising from her neck, spreading across her face. This was not a coincidence. This was deliberate. And she was going to have words with her sister about the event.
