He found her at the local community center, volunteering at a food drive. He’d recognized her immediately, even after all these years. Emily, his childhood confidante, the girl who'd understood him better than anyone. He walked towards her, anticipation bubbling within.

“Emily? Wow, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?” He beamed. She looked up, her expression friendly, but…blank.

“Yes, it has. Do I know you?” she asked, her eyebrows arching slightly. He felt a wave of cold wash over him.

"Mark. Mark Harrison. We were inseparable in elementary school. Remember the time we hid in the library?" He watched as her brow furrowed slightly in a effort of concentration. A look of vague confusion settled across her face.

“I’m sorry, I don’t. Perhaps you have me confused with someone else?” He felt the blood drain from his face. His carefully rehearsed words died in his throat. He saw her smile turn dismissive as she turned to continue her work.
