The buffet table overflowed with delicacies, all arranged with meticulous precision. Martha stood at the edge of the room, her arms crossed, watching the celebration with a detached air. Her father's retirement was a momentous occasion, a chance to celebrate a lifetime of achievement. But Martha felt nothing but a sense of distance.

She’d grown up in the shadow of her father's accomplishments. She had always felt unseen, her own talents and interests dismissed. She was called to speak, and she moved with a slow, deliberate pace. Her gaze remained impassive. She began, "Well, I suppose this is nice."
