The basement smelled of mildew and regret. Sarah held the letter aloft, the flickering light of a single bulb casting elongated shadows across the damp walls. It was addressed to her ex-boyfriend, a scathing indictment of his behavior and a declaration of her supposed strength.

She scoffed, a short, sharp sound. The letter's contents, the pronouncements of independence, now seemed hollow, a desperate attempt to disguise her vulnerability. She remembered the hurt, the feeling of being discarded like yesterday's trash.

She tossed the letter onto a pile of forgotten things, a surge of adrenaline coursing through her. The anger, though still present, felt diluted, replaced by a weary resignation.
