The news hit Ben like a physical blow. He felt a wave of heat wash over him, followed by a cold, numbing sensation in his extremities. He’d just finished a huge presentation, only to discover it was all for naught. For months he had slaved for this company.

His vision blurred, and he had to grip the edge of his desk to steady himself. He felt a deep flush rise in his chest.

He felt the urge to destroy something. To break the silence of the office, to show them he was here.

He stared at his computer and muttered, “Figures.”
