The hum of the elevator’s motor, now silent, was replaced by an oppressive silence. Helen glared at the emergency phone. Three hours. She tapped a fingernail on the phone. Three hours she’d lost, hours she could have spent preparing for her presentation.

"This is just... fantastic," she said, her voice flat. "Absolutely marvelous." The sarcasm dripped from her words. She hated being late. She hated waiting. She hated *this*.

Her coworker, Bob, was attempting to start a conversation. She cut him off with a curt shake of her head. She then turned her gaze back on the phone again.
