He’d almost missed the meeting. Dr. Olsen’s announcement, delivered with his usual calm authority, sent a wave of heat washing over Daniel. The man was leaving, just like that. Daniel had spent years studying under him, dedicating his life to this field.

He felt a deep sense of… betrayal. He pushed his chair back, the movement abrupt and jarring. The room seemed to tilt, the faces of his peers blurring. He ran a hand over his face, as if to wipe away the disbelief.

“So, what happens now?” he asked, his voice flat. He was barely aware of the words leaving his lips. He'd already started running through contingency plans in his head. None of them pleased him.
