It was as if the rug had been yanked out from under her. Sarah felt a jolt of shock, then anger, as she scanned the professor's email. He was leaving for a "better opportunity." After all her hard work? She felt like a child.

She threw her pen across the desk, the plastic body clattering against the wall. The sound was satisfying, at least for a moment. She stood up abruptly, pacing back and forth in the confines of her small office.

She began muttering under her breath, a string of incoherent words punctuated by sharp intakes of breath. She was trapped. Abandoned. Forgotten.
