The sun was setting, casting long shadows when the first crack rang out. The neighbors’ massive birch had finally toppled. Emily stood, her hands on her hips, looking at the damage. The tree was on their property, but the branches reached across the line and had demolished her brand-new gazebo.

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

She had saved for months to purchase the lovely gazebo. She'd envisioned summer evenings spent relaxing inside. Now, it was just splintered wood. She marched back inside, the slam of the door echoing the state of her mental state.
