The bus rumbled down the road, and as she neared the familiar spot, Maria felt a tremor of anticipation. But when she looked out the window, her breath caught. The cherry tree was missing. Her hand flew to her mouth. She had nurtured that tree with love and care, and now, it was nothing.

A wave of bitter disappointment washed over her, followed by a surge of something hot and sharp, like a physical pain. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to contain the fury bubbling within. She wanted to scream. She wanted to shout.

She clenched her jaw. She had to find out who had done this.
