The detective, a burly man with a perpetually tired expression, had the audacity to suggest that it shouldn't matter. "It was a long time ago," he’d drawled, as if a decades-old murder was some trivial event. Michael’s shoulders stiffened. He’d envisioned building a life here, raising his kids in this very house. But now, it would be forever tainted. He imagined the chilling thought of his children playing in a space where someone had breathed their last breath. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm that was brewing inside him.
