The code flickered on the screen, a digital mirror reflecting his own furious expression. Across the video call, Emily smiled, oblivious to the inferno building inside him. The same algorithms, the same user interface, the same goddamn project. His heart hammered in his chest.

He felt the sudden urge to smash his computer. He quickly clenched his fist. The injustice. He had to say something, but the words were lodged.

Her voice, usually pleasant, grated on his ears. “I think it is a great idea, don't you?” she said, her smile broadening. He just stared at the screen. He felt a sharp jab of pain in his side.
