"Unbelievable," Alice muttered, as she watched the moving trucks pull up next door. They were replacing the modest furniture with designer pieces, the old car with a brand new one. Mrs. Peterson, who was always so sweet and helpful, was moving to a different neighborhood, to a house twice the size of Alice's. Alice’s mouth felt dry. The woman had never revealed a thing about her financial situation.

Alice felt a wave of dizziness. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter. Her throat felt tight.

She was going to have to cut back on the grocery budget.
