He stared at the lilies, their sickly sweet perfume invading his small apartment. The doorbell had rung, and there they were, a splash of stark white against the drab hallway. He’d never received flowers in his life. The sheer audacity! He pushed the vase aside on the counter, knocking over a stack of unpaid bills in the process. He didn’t *need* flowers. He didn’t *want* flowers. A low growl rumbled in his throat.

He had half a mind to chuck them out the window, but the thought of the delivery person's disappointment held him back.
