"More coffee?" The words had a strange, slightly breathless sound to them as Maya asked her neighbor, Robert. She'd been baking all morning, which was highly unusual for her, all because the construction at his house had her feeling… different.

The air around his house felt electric, thrumming with activity and an undercurrent of something that set her senses alight. She found herself inventing reasons to be outside – trimming the roses, repotting plants, anything to be within sight.

The way his brow would furrow in concentration, the strength in his hands as he handled tools – it all seemed to captivate her. She'd even gone out and bought a new sundress, the color of sunshine, hoping to maybe catch his eye. Offering him coffee felt like a victory, a small step toward… something.
