She walked into the pawn shop with a purposeful stride, the summer heat forgotten. The shop was a dim, cluttered cave, smelling of old metal and forgotten hopes. But her eyes were fixed on the display case. It was there, nestled amongst tarnished gold and broken watches. The ring. Her grandmother's ring.

Her breath hitched. She felt a lightness, a giddy flutter in her chest. She had to have it. She had to hold it, to feel its weight, to imagine it on her own finger. The owner, a man with a perpetually skeptical frown, watched her, his gaze unsettling.

"Can I see it?" she asked, her voice a little breathless, a little too high-pitched. The man grunted and retrieved the ring, the emerald catching the light. She could almost feel the stories swirling around her, the echoes of her grandmother’s life and love.
