Gemotions

The usual drudgery of the work day was replaced with a nervous excitement. He was normally a calm man, a man of routine, but lately, a flutter of butterflies had taken residence in his stomach. He wasn’t sure how to handle it. He had to be professional; he was training his replacement. But the way her hand brushed his as they reached for the same document… it sent a jolt through him, a jolt he hadn’t felt in years. He felt foolish, out of control, but in the best possible way.

He found himself searching for ways to make her laugh, to see the way her eyes crinkled at the corners. The office seemed brighter, the coffee tasted better. He wanted to tell her everything, his entire life story, and listen to hers. He was suddenly aware of the way the sun streamed through the window, the way the air smelled. He felt as though he had only just woken up from a long sleep.
