Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm mirroring the chaos of the airport. She felt a burning ache in her chest as the delay announcements continued. She was supposed to be in London, to meet his parents.

She imagined the scene, the dinner, the introduction. She envisioned his pride, his smile. She clutched her handbag tighter, the strap cutting into her shoulder. She replayed their recent conversations, his voice soft and low, a sound that always soothed her.

Every delay was a blow. Her palms were sweating. She felt a sudden urge to pace, to do something, anything, to alleviate the pressure. She pulled out her phone and started typing a message, then deleted it. She had to be there. She would be there.
