He’d known, of course. David had seen it in her eyes the moment she’d mentioned the job opening. The way she'd lingered on his name, almost testing it on her tongue. Now, the interview invitations were out, and he had one; she didn't.

He caught a glimpse of her in the break room, refilling her coffee. Her shoulders were slumped, a shadow across her features. He felt… something. A pull, a pang. He'd never seen her like this.

He cleared his throat. "Hey," he began, and then immediately felt foolish. What was he supposed to say? The interview had been tough, filled with questions about the very things he knew she excelled at.

She looked up, startled. "Oh, hey, David." Her voice was quiet. He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to reassure her, to tell her it didn't matter, even though, of course, it did.
