He’d almost missed her on the bus, a blur of familiar hair and a trench coat. He’d jumped off, calling her name. They walked together to the park.

He’d aced the interview, which was now a distant memory. He’d gotten the job. He still felt, though, like he was playing a role. He wanted her to feel… what, exactly? His happiness? Relief?

He watched her face as he told her the news. He noticed the slight tremor of her lip, the way her eyes held a mix of emotions. He reached out, almost without thinking, and touched her hand.

He felt a shock, a sudden electricity. He wanted to say something, anything, but the words were stuck, trapped in his throat.
