The old carousel in the park whirled and creaked. They sat on a bench, watching the riders. His breath hitched as she began to describe the carnival from their youth. He remembered the way her hair smelled, the way her eyes reflected the flashing lights. He remembered the taste of her ice cream melting down her fingers.

"Remember that clown?" she asked, wrinkling her nose. He forced a smile. He was remembering the magic tricks she had shown him, the secret handshakes. He remembered the way her voice had sounded when she whispered her secrets.

“Terrifying,” she said. He wanted to say, “No, beautiful.” He wanted to know if she remembered the lingering glances, the shared stolen moments. He ached to know if she felt the same. He wanted to reach out and take her hand.
