The old trunk in the guest room was usually off-limits. But today, Emily had a sudden, inexplicable urge to open it. She was looking for a specific scarf, a simple errand, but the moment she lifted the heavy lid, she forgot what she was searching for. Inside were boxes, labeled, "Emily's School Years."

She sat on the floor, surrounded by the echoes of her past. She found her first attempt at a novel, a rambling tale of talking animals and enchanted forests. She found a science project on the life cycle of a butterfly, complete with hand-drawn diagrams. A warmth spread through her, a feeling akin to sunlight on her skin.

She suddenly felt a desperate need to call her mother, to hear her voice, to tell her about this newfound treasure. She had to share it. She longed to feel her presence. She wanted to tell her she loved her. She felt like singing.
