The invitation was tucked into her pocket, the crinkled paper a constant reminder. Amelia kept pulling it out, smoothing the edges with a nervous thumb. Every glance in the mirror promised perfection, a symphony of carefully chosen clothes and artfully arranged hair. She practically vibrated with excitement. The walk to the cafe felt like an eternity; each step, a tiny drumbeat of anticipation.

The door swung open, and the cafe was... empty. A single barista, wiping down the counter, looked up with a bored expression. Amelia approached, a smile plastered on her face that felt brittle. "The surprise party for Liam?" she asked, her voice a little too high, a little too breathless.

"Cancelled," the barista said, without much interest. "Something came up." Amelia’s world seemed to shrink, the bright colors of the cafe suddenly muted. Her stomach twisted, a cold knot forming in her gut. She could feel the smile on her face slowly falling away, a mask she no longer had the strength to hold.
