“Unbelievable,” muttered James under his breath, after overhearing the conversation. He had to sit down to steady himself. He felt a tightness in his chest and a sudden, inexplicable heat in his cheeks. He could hear his own blood rushing in his ears. The junior associate, Chloe, was being paid more than him.

He found himself drawn to the conference room where she was often found. He found ways to insert himself into her conversations. He asked her advice about various tasks he was working on.

He noticed the way the sunlight played on her hair, the way she could solve problems with such ease. He began to find excuses to walk past her desk. The thought of her filled his mind.
