The review landed with a thud, a digital dagger to the heart. Chef Antoine reread the words, the critic's scathing assessment of his signature bouillabaisse. His hands trembled, accidentally knocking over a spice rack, the aroma of thyme and rosemary filling the air – scents he usually found comforting, but today, they felt hollow. He imagined her, the critic, Penelope Bellweather, the way she'd moved through the dining room, her silver hair gleaming under the soft light. He recalled the flash of her emerald eyes when she took her first bite, and felt a flush crawl up his neck. He wanted, more than anything, to know what she thought, to understand, to… to make things right. He grabbed his phone and scrolled through his contacts, hesitating over Penelope's name, a name he'd spent the last week obsessively memorizing.
