The chipped paint of the yard sale sign practically screamed at Amelia. It was the bear, though, that truly drew her in, sitting slumped on a dusty card table. A familiar, one-eared face stared back at her. Her heart gave a sudden, erratic thump.

She found herself walking towards it, her gait a little too brisk, a little too eager. The woman running the sale was old, her face lined like a roadmap. Amelia cleared her throat. “How much for… him?”

The old woman squinted. “Five dollars. He’s seen better days, poor thing.” Amelia reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched the worn fur. A wave of warmth spread through her, a sensation like sunshine on her skin.
