The realtor had mentioned a "quirky" feature of the house, but had glossed over it. Now, as Leo scraped away at the loose plaster in the basement, he understood what she’d meant. A small door, almost perfectly concealed, became visible. A sense of excited energy coursed through him. It was a sensation he had been struggling to define, but he recognized it now.

He pushed the door inward, and a gust of stale air rushed out, carrying with it the scent of old wood and something vaguely floral. Inside, a narrow staircase led downwards. He felt a sudden, almost desperate need to explore, to discover whatever lay below. He switched on his phone’s flashlight, the beam cutting through the darkness.

He descended the stairs, his heart pounding against his ribs. The air grew colder, the scent stronger. At the bottom, a small room opened up, lit by a single bare bulb. It contained a collection of photographs. He held his breath as he recognised the subjects.
