He seemed to possess a magnetic pull, she realized as she sat in his car. She couldn't stop staring, mesmerized. Her pulse hammered a frantic rhythm in her ears. He was driving to a gallery opening, a place she'd never normally frequent, but the invitation, and the prospect of spending time with him, had her instantly agreeing.

The city lights blurred past, but she barely registered them. Instead, she fixated on the way his hand rested on the gear shift, the way his jaw tensed in concentration. She felt a lightness, a joyful anticipation that made her want to sing.

He’d said he liked her laugh, and she felt compelled to offer it up again, just to hear his pleased response. Even a simple question, such as “What do you think of this song?” filled her with a strange, giddy delight. She felt weightless, like she could float away at any moment.
