He caught her eyes and felt a jolt of panic, then a weird feeling of elation. The journal, the source of this tangled web, sat innocently on his desk. He felt exposed, naked.

He started speaking to her, casually at first. He’d say things she had written about. He'd test her, probe for a reaction. His stomach did flips when he spoke to her. The sound of her voice made the blood rush to his ears.

He couldn’t tell if she was mad, but he was relieved. She seemed calm, almost amused. She started leaving notes on his desk. Little jokes, references to things she knew he had read.

He couldn't sleep. He couldn't eat. He’d find himself staring at her, taking in her every movement, the way her hand flew when she spoke. He'd never felt like this before. He prayed for it to never stop.
