The chipped teacup, a delicate thing with hand-painted roses, sat on the mahogany table. Sophia's mother announced her decision to sell her great-grandmother's tea set. Sophia was shocked. A sudden, almost painful, awareness of the teacup’s fragility surged through her.

She found herself analyzing her mother, looking for any trace of the pain she felt herself. The way her mother's hands moved, the slight tremor in her voice. Every small detail seemed magnified. She thought about how the sunlight would catch the light within the cup, the way the roses seemed to bloom with a touch of warmth.

“I’m sorry, sweetie,” her mother said, noticing her expression. Sophia wanted to grab the cup, to hide it, but instead she found herself staring into it. “I know it’s a difficult thing to do, but…” Sophia felt a need to help, even if that meant sacrificing something for herself. “We’ll find a way,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
