He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he'd developed around her. The sheer audacity of it: both parties on the same night. He stared at the text message from Chloe, confirming her attendance at *his* party. His fingers trembled slightly. He'd poured over the details of her invitation, the calligraphy, the embossed flowers.

His own party, a low-key gathering with friends, suddenly felt insignificant. He thought of her, the way the sunlight caught her hair, the way she made him laugh. He hadn't stopped thinking about her since the last time they spoke.

He could cancel. He could say he was sick. He could just... disappear. He quickly sent out a mass text message informing his guests that his party was postponed. He’d deal with the fallout later.
