She stood in front of the publisher's building, the rejection letter crumpled in her hand. The glass facade reflected her distorted image. She’d put everything into this, into the editor, Mr. Hayes. His rejection felt like a personal betrayal. She stared at the building, willing herself to go inside, to plead her case. She imagined herself walking into his office, seeing him again. The thought sparked a strange mixture of dread and excitement. She felt a surge of energy, a need to be near him, to change his mind, to… well, she didn’t know what exactly, but she knew she had to try. She took a deep breath, and then walked away.
