The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum louder whenever Sarah was around. Suddenly, the stale air felt charged, almost electric. He found himself rearranging his desk, even though it was already meticulously organized. Anything to be within her orbit, even if it meant a fleeting glance.

His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs as she walked towards him, a file clutched in her hand. “Could you take a look at this, Mark?” she asked, her voice a low, melodic chime. He stammered a response, his cheeks burning. “Of course, Sarah. Right away.” The words felt clumsy, inadequate. He wanted to say something clever, something to make her smile, but the opportunity vanished before he could find the right phrase.

He kept the file on his desk for the rest of the day, repeatedly glancing at it, not to work, but to remember the fleeting touch of her fingers as she handed it to him.
