He caught himself holding his breath every time she entered the room. His palms got clammy, and a nervous energy coursed through him. The rivalry for the promotion was real, but it felt secondary to the magnetic pull she exerted.

He found he couldn't help but seek her out, "accidentally" bumping into her by the coffee machine, or lingering near her desk "just to ask a quick question." The office, once a monotonous landscape of spreadsheets and deadlines, was suddenly alive with possibility.

He started dressing better, paying more attention to his grooming. He found himself smiling at his reflection, the anticipation of seeing her fueling his every action. Even a simple "hello" from her would send him reeling.
