He was sitting across the table, explaining his new work opportunity. The city lights of the skyline behind him looked cold and indifferent. She was lost in his words, but the words were fading in her mind. She thought about his laugh, his smile, the way his hand felt against hers.

"It's a huge step," he said, "and I'm really excited." He reached across the table, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. She closed her eyes, savouring the brief contact.

She felt a sudden, desperate urge to say something, anything. But the words wouldn't come. She opened her eyes, watching him with an intensity that she didn't realize she possessed. Every detail was imprinted on her mind. The curve of his lip. The slight crinkle near his eye. This moment, she knew, would never come again.
