Eliza held the letter up to the light, as though trying to decipher its hidden meaning. It was from Michael. Years had passed since the incident. Years of silence. She felt a tremor run through her, a mix of disbelief and… something else. Something warm and unfamiliar. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

She sat on the floor, back against the sofa, the letter spread out before her. The words, handwritten, seemed to leap off the page. He admitted his fault, detailed his regret. She re-read the last sentence with particular intensity. A wave of dizziness washed over her.

She had to get out of the house. The world suddenly felt beautiful, promising. She felt restless, eager. She needed to do something. Anything. And maybe, just maybe, she knew what that something was.
