The grand room was filled with the rustle of silk and the murmur of hushed whispers. Beside him, his sister, Penelope, was practically vibrating. The lawyer began his recitation, the words washing over Elias in a wave of detached disinterest. The legal jargon bored him senseless. “To Miss Penelope, the family jewels.” Penelope gasped, her eyes wide with greedy delight. “And to Mr. Elias… the deeds to a small plot of land.” He barely registered the words. But when he saw a folded piece of paper among the documents, and heard Penelope groan, he knew. He took it into his hands and felt his head swim. The plot held a cabin by a hidden lake.
