“Well, isn’t this a surprise?” Michael muttered to himself, watching Ms. Davies emerge from a chauffeured limousine. He felt a strange flutter in his chest, his hands suddenly clammy. Her eyes swept over him as she smiled. “Just admiring the new car?” she asked, her voice like a melodious chime.

He mumbled something about the weather, completely forgetting the perfectly crafted retort he’d planned. He watched her, a woman of wealth and class. He had a sudden urge to buy her something, an expensive gift.

He found himself spending more time at the local coffee shop, hoping to run into her. He’d start to imagine the possibilities, fantasizing.
