It was a cold sweat that broke over Chloe when she saw the results. A 'C' on her history midterm. She'd put everything into that class, mostly because Michael was also in the class.

She pressed her palm to her forehead, the paper crinkling in her hand. The professor's scathing comments seemed to echo in her ears, each phrase a blow. He'd said her arguments were weak, her sources unreliable.

She wanted to call him, to ask if there was a mistake. She even wanted to ask Michael if he thought she had done badly. She fought the urge to rush out and burst into tears. She clenched her fists, her knuckles white. She had to do better.
